Help Beat Fatigue With Your Display Height

Help Beat Fatigue With Your Display Height

When we think about building a productive, creative space—whether it’s a music workstation, a studio desk, or a home office—one of the most overlooked factors is display height. Yet, this simple detail can dramatically affect your comfort, focus, and long-term health. The recognition of this led to one of the largest changes we made to the updated Platform with the addition of an adjustable center shelf, the only studio desk on the market with this feature.

The Science Behind Display Height

Your body naturally seeks a neutral position—where your head, neck, and spine are aligned and muscles aren’t under constant tension. When a monitor is too low, you end up tilting your head downward. This can put extra strain on the neck and shoulders, leading to discomfort, headaches, and even long-term musculoskeletal issues.

It's a similar story if your display is too high, except this really amps up the fatigue, and can often lead to slumping with your eyes up, which can lead to headaches.

The ideal display height positions the top third of the screen at (or slightly below) eye level. This allows your gaze to fall naturally, keeping your head upright and reducing unnecessary muscle activation in the neck and upper back. Over time, this alignment lowers fatigue and helps you stay focused for longer sessions.

Reducing Fatigue and Improving Focus

When your display is at the right height:

  • Neck & Shoulder Strain Decreases: Less tension means you can work or create for longer periods without pain.
  • Eye Comfort Improves: A downward gaze angle between 15° and 20° is optimal for reducing eye strain.
  • Posture Naturally Improves: Proper monitor positioning encourages a neutral spine, preventing the “forward head” posture that can lead to fatigue and stiffness.

This combination results in less overall energy expenditure just to maintain your working position—so you can dedicate more mental bandwidth to what matters most.

Practical Steps to Optimize Display Height

  • Buy the updated Platform Studio Desk: The updated Platform has three height settings for you to dial in your display height.
  • Use Adjustable Monitor Arms: These allow you to fine-tune screen placement for perfect alignment.
  • Check Your Eye Line: Sit naturally, look straight ahead, and adjust until the top third of the display matches your gaze.
  • Mind Multi-Monitor Setups: Keep your primary monitor centered; secondary monitors should be as close to eye level as possible to avoid frequent neck twisting.

Why It Matters for Creative Work

If you’re producing music, editing video, or coding late into the night, small physical discomforts can break your flow and increase mental fatigue. Proper display height helps maintain a sense of physical ease so your mind can stay locked into the creative process.
